As part of the NSW Government’s significant investment to deliver more than 170 new and upgraded schools, Richard Crookes Constructions were awarded the design and construct contract for the Smalls Road Public School in Ryde NSW.
This project provides a new primary school with teaching spaces for 1000 students over three classroom levels and is due for completion in early 2020. What makes this structure unique is its geometric shape with classrooms arcing around the curved perimeter overlooking a circular landscaped courtyard.
Due to the radial nature of the structure and the client’s requirement for an accelerated programme, Ultrafloor were the successful structural design and construct contractor. The Ultrafloor scope of works included the design, supply and installation of the Level 1 and Level 2 suspended horizontal precast structure.
The precast elements included the primary precast radial Megabeams and the concentric Ultrafloor slab system. The prestressed primary beams approximately 15m long and were 600mm wide x 750mm deep. An Ultrafloor 250C-450 slab system which spanned between 5.165m and 6.790m due to the wedge shaped nature of the slab zones was supported on the primary precast beams. A 32MPa in-situ topping slab was cast over these two precast elements resulting in a combined structural depth of 1070mm.
Each of the suspended levels consisted of 30 radial primary beams and approximately 3,000m2 of Ultrafloor slab system. Using two cranes Ultrafloor installed each of the levels in 7 installation days using only 10 men. Ultrafloor provided an elegant and efficient structural outcome for the client whilst meeting an accelerated programme via a cost effective and easy to build precast concrete structure.
